Why Latvia deserves a serious look

Latvia rarely makes the shortlist families draw up on their own — which is exactly why it is worth including here. It offers genuinely affordable business, IT, and engineering programmes, largely taught in English, and unlike many countries, several universities do not charge non-EU students significantly more than EU students. Visa processing is also comparatively fast, at 30 to 60 days.
Riga and beyond
Riga is home to the country’s main technical and medical universities — including Riga Technical University and Riga Stradiņš University — and offers the widest range of English-taught programmes. Living costs are noticeably lower than in most EU capitals.
The honest trade-offs
Latvia’s international recognition is not as globally established as Germany’s or France’s, so students prioritising maximum brand prestige may look elsewhere. For families prioritising cost and a straightforward process, it is one of the strongest options in this entire guide.

What a year actually costs
Small country, seriously international universities.
Latvia is easy to overlook and often shouldn’t be. Riga Stradiņš University has one of the longest-running English-medium medical programmes in the Baltics, with a student body drawn from across Europe and Asia, and the cost sits meaningfully below Western Europe.

Medicine lands around €16,000–€21,000 all in; other fields around €7,000–€11,000. Riga is the only real city option, so there is less regional variation than in Poland.

What it is actually like
Riga is the whole experience.
Latvia has under two million people, and Riga holds a third of them. Almost everything — universities, hospitals, employers, the international student community — sits in one city. That concentration is a genuine advantage for a student: it is walkable, well connected to the rest of Europe, and small enough that you stop being anonymous quickly.
English is widely spoken among younger Latvians, and international programmes are fully English-medium.
Winters are long and dark. This is not a footnote — for students from South Asia or the Gulf it is the single most common adjustment difficulty we hear about.
Schengen access is excellent. Riga is a cheap flight from most of Europe, which matters more than it sounds over a five-year degree.
The local job market is small. Latvia is a fine place to study and a limited place to build a career — plan on moving within the EU afterwards.
Who this is really for
A quiet, underrated middle option.
Latvia sits between the low-cost southern routes and the expensive Western ones — more polished than the cheapest options, considerably more affordable than the Netherlands or Ireland. For the right student that middle ground is exactly right.
