Moving to Spain / From Australia
A long way from home, with a smoother path than you’d expect.
Australia holds its own bilateral social security agreement with Spain, and Australian applicants generally move through the Digital Nomad Visa and Non-Lucrative Visa processes without nationality-specific obstacles.

What the social security agreement means in practice
Like Canada, Australia’s agreement is a real, practical simplification.
Australia’s bilateral social security agreement with Spain allows Digital Nomad Visa applicants to provide a certificate of coverage confirming continued Australian social security standing, rather than needing to register fresh with the Spanish system from day one. This is worth confirming your specific eligibility for early in your planning.
The distance factor, honestly addressed
Australia’s distance from Spain is a genuine practical consideration that doesn’t show up in visa paperwork but shows up in daily life: flights home are long and expensive, time zones make staying close to family harder, and the “quick weekend visit” that’s easy for a British or Canadian family isn’t realistic here. This isn’t a reason not to move — plenty of Australian families do and build genuinely happy lives in Spain — but it’s worth planning for honestly rather than discovering it as a surprise six months in.
The honest trade-offs
Both Spain and Australia tax residents on worldwide income, so understanding how the double taxation agreement between the two countries applies to your specific income sources matters more here than it might for some other nationalities. This is worth a proper conversation with a cross-border tax professional alongside your visa planning, not an afterthought.

The Australian difference
Superannuation is the question that decides it.
Australians are taxed on residency rather than citizenship, so the clean break is available in the same way it is for Canadians. What is genuinely distinct is superannuation — and it is the issue we spend most of a first call on with Australian families.
Spain may not treat super the way Australia does. Australia’s treatment of super in the pension phase is unusually generous by world standards. Spain applies its own rules, and income you expected to be tax-free at home may not be once you are Spanish tax resident. This single point can change whether the move is affordable.
Preservation age still governs access. Moving overseas does not unlock your super early. If your plan depends on drawing on it before preservation age, test that assumption first.
Ceasing Australian tax residency is a real test. The ATO looks at your domicile, your permanent place of abode and your ties. As with Canada, a half-severed position is the worst of both worlds.
There is an Australia–Spain tax treaty covering most categories of income, but treaties allocate taxing rights — they do not automatically make anything tax-free. Get advice from someone who has actually read both sides.
Do this before you book anything
Get a written view on how your specific super arrangement will be treated once you are Spanish tax resident. We have seen families plan an entire move around an income figure that changed materially once that question was answered properly. It is a few hundred dollars of advice against a life decision.
The practical differences
Distance is not a detail. It is the trade-off.
This is a twenty-four-hour journey with at least one stop. There is no direct route. Trips home are expensive, exhausting and infrequent — realistically once a year, not three times. For families with ageing parents, that is the hardest part of the whole decision and deserves an honest conversation early.
The time difference cuts both ways. Spain runs eight to ten hours behind eastern Australia depending on daylight saving. Excellent if you want to disconnect from Australian work hours; difficult if you are keeping Australian clients or calling family casually.
Seasons flip. A Spanish Christmas is cold and a Spanish July is fierce. Obvious on paper, genuinely disorienting in year one.
DFAT issues apostilles. Australia is a Hague Convention member, so birth and marriage certificates and your AFP national police check are apostilled through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, then sworn-translated into Spanish.
Medicare does not cover you in Spain. You will need Spanish private cover meeting the visa requirements. There is no reciprocal arrangement that helps you here.
The honest summary
The hardest of the four — and often the most transformative.
Australians face the longest journey and the trickiest retirement-income question on this page. What they gain is the thing Australia genuinely cannot offer: a continent of distinct countries, languages and histories within a few hours of the front door. That is usually the real reason, and it is a good one — provided the numbers have been checked properly first.
Spain works well for Australians who
Want genuine proximity to Europe — a weekend in Rome instead of a fourteen-hour flight to anywhere
Have resolved the superannuation question in writing before committing
Are moving for a different life, not a cheaper version of the same one
Think harder if
You need to get home quickly and often — you cannot, and pretending otherwise causes real distress
Your income plan rests on super being treated as it is in Australia
You are chasing better weather alone; Australia already wins that comparison
