For families and professionals across the UK, US, Canada, and Australia
Move to Spain. Properly, and with people who have actually done it.
Whether you’re weighing the Digital Nomad Visa, the Non-Lucrative Visa, or a full family relocation, the process is more forgiving — and more confusing — than most people expect. We have personally navigated a UK relocation and now live the Spanish system day to day.

Two honest paths into Spain
Most people confuse these two visas. Here’s the difference.

The Digital Nomad Visa
For people who keep working remotely for a company or clients outside Spain. Built for professionals who want to relocate without giving up their income.

The Non-Lucrative Visa
For people who won’t be working in Spain at all — funded instead by pension, investments, rental income, or savings. Built for retirees and financially independent families.

2026 has brought real tightening. A plan built on outdated blogs will fail.
Both visas look simple on paper: hit an income threshold, gather documents, submit an application. In practice, 2026 has brought real changes. Consulates are scrutinising bank statement consistency far more closely than before. The Non-Lucrative Visa’s ban on any form of work — including remote work for a foreign employer — is now being enforced more strictly. Processing timelines regularly run three to six months once document preparation, apostilles, and appointment shortages are included.
None of this is meant to discourage you. It’s meant to explain why families who go in with a clear, honest picture of the current requirements move through the process far more smoothly than families working from outdated blog posts.
Who this path is for
Families choose this path for different reasons.
Post-Brexit clarity
British families who once had freedom of movement now navigate Spain the same way any non-EU applicant does. Understanding what actually changed is the starting point for most UK families.
Keeping your income, changing your life
Canadian, US, and Australian professionals whose work already happens on a laptop, using the Digital Nomad Visa to relocate without changing employer or career.
A different pace of life, fully funded
Families and retirees with pensions, investments, or savings who want to build a life in Spain without working locally at all.

Retiring or wintering abroad? Read the guide first.
“Eleven Havens, One Decision” is a data-driven comparative guide for Canadians and retirees pricing European alternatives to the U.S. snowbird trail. It compares visa routes, pension tax treatment, and real cost of living for retired couples across eleven European countries — including several covered by the Non-Lucrative Visa above — with every figure source-graded rather than guessed.
