Estonia is a small country with an outsized reputation in technology. It is the birthplace of Skype, runs its government almost entirely online, and its universities lean into that identity with strong computer science, engineering, and IT programmes. For a student with a clear interest in technology, Estonia offers a genuinely specialised environment rather than a generic study-abroad experience.
Tallinn or Tartu?
Tallinn has the stronger tech scene, more international companies, and free public transport for registered residents — but higher living costs. Tartu is Estonia’s classic university town, meaningfully cheaper, with a tighter-knit student community. Both are realistic choices depending on your child’s priorities.
The honest trade-offs
Estonia is a newer destination for South Asian and GCC families compared to Poland or Hungary, so the existing student community is smaller. Families who value a large, established South Asian network elsewhere may prefer Poland or Hungary; families prioritising a tech-focused environment often find Estonia the better fit.

What a year actually costs
The most digital country in Europe, at central European prices.
Estonia built its reputation on technology, and it is not marketing. This is the country that produced Skype, Wise and Bolt, runs government almost entirely online, and treats digital infrastructure as a public utility. For a student in IT, engineering or business, that environment is the actual product.
Tuition, most fields: €2,000–€8,000 a year across IT, engineering, business and social sciences

A realistic all-in year
Most students land between €8,000 and €13,000 for a full year including tuition — comfortably below Western Europe while sitting inside the EU and Schengen.

Where to study
Two universities carry most of the international intake.
University of Tartu — the oldest and most research-heavy, in a genuine student town where the university is the centre of the city rather than a district of it.
Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) — strongest for IT and engineering, and closest to the startup sector that makes Estonia worth choosing in the first place.
English-medium teaching is standard on international programmes, and English is widely spoken day to day — unusually so for the region.
Medicine in English is limited here. If medicine is the goal, Latvia, Romania, Bulgaria or Hungary are the serious options — not Estonia.
After you graduate
A small country with an outsized tech job market.
Estonia allows graduates to stay on and look for work rather than requiring immediate departure, and its startup sector hires internationally as a matter of routine. For a technology graduate, the ratio of opportunity to population here is unlike anywhere else in Europe.
